Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be a very embarrassing problem. If you regularly suffer from halitosis, it might hurt your self-confidence quite badly. However, you don’t need to worry about having this condition forever! There are plenty of ways you can deal with it. Here are eight tips to help you deal with bad breath:
- Watch what you eat. Some foods may cause your breath to smell for some time after you eat them. So if you don’t want to suffer from halitosis, cut down on strong-smelling foods. Try to limit your intake of garlic, onions, coffee, and fish.
- Stop smoking. All the smoke from cigarettes can linger on your breath for quite some time. Not only does smoking cause bad breath, but it also stains teeth and can be very dangerous for your gums. Therefore, it’s a good idea to ditch this bad habit once and for all!
- Are you brushing your teeth regularly? If not, you will be encouraging halitosis. To keep bad breath at bay, you should be brushing your teeth at least twice a day. If you have time, brush them after every meal as well. This will remove any food that is stuck between your teeth, which could be causing bad breath. don’t forget to also brush your tongue!
- Could you be suffering from gum disease? Bad breath is a symptom of this condition. If your halitosis gets particularly bad, you might notice other symptoms, such as sore gums. Book an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
- Got a dry mouth? Then have a drink! Not only might you be suffering from dehydration, but your dry mouth could be causing bad breath.
- When you brush your teeth, remember to use mouthwash and dental floss. An antibacterial mouthwash can be particularly good at fighting halitosis. Also, flossing your teeth is equally as important. The dental floss can get to food that your toothbrush can’t reach and makes sure there is no food hiding between any of your teeth!
- Bad breath can be a symptom of an underlying condition or disease. If you have persistent bad breath and nothing you do seems to help, see your doctor. It could be a sign that you are suffering from kidney disease, diabetes, or liver disease.
- Sometimes bad breath is a result of being ill. Many people who are sick with the flu or have a sinus infection will have particularly severe halitosis for a few days until their illness subsides. While you are ill, try to wash out your mouth with mouthwash as often as possible.
Don’t panic if you have quite bad halitosis. There are many ways you can try to fight it. If none of the eight tips help, you can always talk to your dentist about the problem. Your dentist will often give you special toothpaste or mouthwash. Furthermore, if that doesn’t help, your dentist can refer you to an oral hygiene specialist. So it’s important not to get too beat up about your bad breath. As you can see, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel!
